In today’s rapidly evolving global landscape, data-driven insights are fundamental to modern development. They play a critical role in shaping policies and decisions across sectors like public health, education, economics, and governance. The availability of accurate, transparent, and timely data is essential for informed decision-making, effective policy formulation, and ensuring accountability. With that in mind, it’s essential that institutions responsible for data collection and dissemination uphold the highest standards of quality and transparency.
In light of this, the government has recently formed an eight-member taskforce on 2nd May, 2025 to assess and enhance the quality, transparency, and accessibility of data produced by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). The taskforce is chaired by Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Executive Chairman of PPRC. Mohammad Abdul Wazed, Senior Fellow and Program Advisor at PPRC and former Director General of BBS, also serves as a member. Also on the taskforce is Professor Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam, a key resource person at PPRC and Professor of Population Sciences at the University of Dhaka.
The taskforce will formulate recommendations on the quality, accounting system, and transparency of all statistical activities of the BBS along with formulating recommendations for coordinating and harmonising the surveys and publications of BBS with the surveys and statistical publications conducted by various organisations under other ministries.
